In Thailand we also find some temples of the Khmer that reigned here more than thousand years ago. The temple in Phimai was once connected to the capital Angkor via a direct road - a long time ago!

One of the two most important roads in Cambodia: theoretically sealed, but not made for the weight of the trucks that roll along. The potholes which open up here are very impressive!

During the Waterfestival we have the chance to see the King of Cambodia very close - King Sihanouk congratulates the rowers and wishes them good luck for the big competition.

About three hundred boats with up to 80 rowers take part in this year's Waterfestival. For three days the rowers compete to be the fastest - depending on the type of boat the rowers stand, knee or sit in the colourful painted boats.

The Waterfestival is the biggest party in Cambodia: the full moon in November marks the end of the rainy season, now the harvesting starts. From that time on, the water-level of the Mekong goes down and the river leaves behind fertile sediments on which the many farmers of the country depend. To thank the river this festival is held every year for three days with boating competitions and illuminated floats.

Kep has been a well-liked holiday-village in former times. But also here the years of war have left their traces: today no rich high society resides in the colonial-style villas. The houses covered with bullet-holes are left behind, only some of them are used as living space the Cambodian way.
