The main road to the South takes us to the Oanob-Dam shortly before reaching Rehoboth. This recreation resort allows us to relax after the strenuous days in Windhoek. Beside the visit of the dam, which was first used in 1990 and can contain till 36 millions m³ water, we have the following schedule: viewing the sunset, the moonrise, the birds and, as we are very active, canoeing.

Yesterday we did it: We left Windhoek! To test our equipment, we did not drive to far away from the shopping-malls in Windhoek: the Daan-Viljoen Nationalpark.
Here also we spend the most of the time working on the car - but now it's close to what we wanted it to be! And we also get aware because of what we are here. We make a walk and see our first game: zebras, wildebeest, oryx, elan and warthogs.
In the first night, the weather also was a bit unexpected: we had rain the whole night through! A good possibility for our tent to proof it's water-resistance. The next day was clear again, and also the night. It's getting winter here in Namibia with freezing temperatures. Dinner in ski-outfit - that's also Africa!

Windhoek, A capital with thausend faces.
Windoek, the capital of Namibia, is in the middle of the country. At first it looks like a small town with 170.000 inhabitants but it offers everything an Europan can need! Restaurants, coffee shops, cinema, theater and also shopping malls. In the three weeks we spent here, we were surprised to see how much you can find here, for example, all the equipment and tools we needed for the car. But the most amazing thing for us in this city was its population. It is the reflect of the numerous ethnic groups in the country: Bushmen, Owanbos, Hereros, Himbas, Afrikaans, German... So much faces, every colour shades from black to white skin and every face forms, representative for all the specific ethnic group - or their countless mixtures.

The last nine days we spent working in and on our car: We tried to make the interior as useful as possible (according to a long-thought plan). Even passed the Sundays and public holidays we worked - which have been surprisingly many in the last two weeks. Finally we were very happy when the sawing, smoothing and screwing ended. And we were quite proud of our work. We hope that the twelve square meter we built into the car wil proof to be as usefull as we expect it to be! Definitely is, that there is no Landrover in Africa with more screws built into it as ours. Here's a short picture guide to our work.

After our landing in Windhoek, we settled down in the "Rivendell Lodge" in Beethovenstreet. A nice little room with blue walls gave us a homey welcome - us, our 140kg luggage and all the equipment from the car. Usually it's very quit here - except when people like us start to work with their saw and drill on thei car. We try to reduce our working time to times when nobody wants to enjoy the relaxing pool or terrace. It seems that - luckily - the water in the pool is still to cold for most of the guests - althought it's usually about 30°C warm!

Our first big deal was a rooftop tent - or in other words: our sleeping room for the next months! An interesting technique which - we hope - will proof itself to be very usable. As a packet of 120x120 cm it rests on the roofrack. When expanded it gives sleeping-area of 120x240 cm. Even for tall people more than enough. Bedding an small stuff can rest inside, even when folded away.
